Capital City Trailer Rental

frequently asked questions

What do I need to rent a trailer?

Renters must provide a valid driver’s license, proof of current auto insurance, and a credit or debit card for payment and the security deposit. The towing vehicle must be properly equipped and capable of safely towing the selected trailer.

Do I need a trailer brake controller?

A brake controller may be required for larger trailers or heavier loads. We will let you know the towing requirements for the trailer you reserve before pickup. We also have an upgrade option that gives you trailer brake control direct from your smartphone.

What size hitch ball do I need?

Most trailers require a specific hitch-ball size, typically 2 inches or 2-5/16 inches. Confirm the required ball size, hitch rating, wiring connection, and vehicle towing capacity before arriving for pickup.

Can you help connect the trailer?

Yes. We can help verify the hitch connection, safety chains, coupler, lights, and breakaway cable at pickup. The renter remains responsible for ensuring their vehicle and equipment are appropriate for towing.

Is towing equipment included?

The trailer rental includes the trailer itself. Hitch balls, receiver mounts, tie-down straps, ratchet straps, cargo nets, moving blankets, and other accessories may be available separately—ask when booking.

How much weight can I haul?

Every trailer has a maximum payload capacity. Do not exceed the trailer’s posted gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), axle rating, tire rating, but more importantly, your tow vehicle’s rated capacity. Load weight includes cargo, equipment, attachments, and anything secured to the trailer.

Can I haul a vehicle, skid steer, or other equipment?

Only if the trailer is specifically rated and configured for that type and weight of load. Provide the make, model, dimensions, and approximate weight of what you plan to haul so we can confirm compatibility before you reserve.

Do I need to bring tie-down straps?

Yes, unless you have arranged to rent straps or other securement equipment from us. You are responsible for properly securing all cargo in accordance with Michigan law and safe towing practices.

How long can I rent a trailer?

We offer daily, weekend, weekly, and longer-term rentals based on availability. Pickup and return times are arranged when you reserve your trailer.

What happens if I return it late?

Late returns may be charged an additional rental day or late fee, especially if another customer is scheduled to use the trailer. Contact us as soon as possible if your plans change.

What if the trailer is damaged or has a tire issue?

Stop using the trailer if it is unsafe, damaged, or experiencing a mechanical issue. Contact us immediately before attempting repairs, moving the trailer further, or arranging roadside service.
